Microsoft Teams Rooms has dominated the AI meeting room conversation, but Zoom's counteroffensive is quietly reshaping just as many deployments. Zoom AI Companion 2.0 — now rolling out as a native feature inside Zoom Rooms — brings real-time meeting summaries, smart recaps, AI-generated action items, and intelligent participant framing directly into the room experience. For AV integrators, this isn't just a software update: it has direct hardware consequences.

What AI Companion 2.0 Actually Does in the Room

Unlike add-on AI summary tools that process recordings after the fact, AI Companion 2.0 operates in-session. It transcribes in real time, identifies speakers, tags action items as they're spoken, and surfaces smart suggestions to participants on the room display. The intelligent framing feature works in conjunction with the room camera to auto-frame active speakers — a function that requires cameras with direct Zoom Rooms certification and compatible HDMI or USB video paths.

This matters because not every PTZ camera that works beautifully with a Crestron or Extron system is Zoom Rooms certified with AI framing support. Integrators who spec cameras based on image quality alone, without verifying AI Companion compatibility, are setting up their clients for a feature gap on day one.

The Compute and Audio Requirements Are Real

Low-end speakerphone deployments produce summaries with unattributed speaker blocks, reducing the feature's utility considerably.

Opportunity in the Installed Base

The installed base of Zoom Rooms globally is enormous — and a significant percentage of those rooms were deployed before AI Companion existed. That represents a retrofit and upgrade opportunity for integrators willing to position themselves as AI readiness consultants. A room audit that evaluates camera certification, compute headroom, and microphone quality against AI Companion requirements is a structured, billable service that most clients don't know they need yet.

What This Means for AV Integrators

Integrators who proactively audit existing Zoom Rooms deployments for AI Companion compatibility are sitting on a high-margin upgrade pipeline — most rooms installed before 2025 will need at least one hardware component refreshed to fully realize the feature set. More importantly, leading with AI readiness in new Zoom Rooms proposals positions the integrator as a strategic technology partner rather than a commodity installer, justifying premium specifications and ongoing service agreements.
